Dimensity 9300 in vivo X100 Pro throttles after 15 minutes in stress test

Ivan, 27 November 2023

As the new vivo X100 Pro gets into the hands of keen testers, we can finally get an idea of the thermal performance of the MediaTek Dimensity 9300 chipset with its four-Cortex X4 CPU cores and no efficiency units.

As expected, cooling a chipset with four high-performance cores is a tough task. In a popular CPU throttling test, the eight-core processor throttled down to 46% of its performance in just 15 minutes. Four of the cores lowered to 1.2GHz, three to 1.5GHz, and one to just 0.6GHz - that's compared to a potential 3.25GHz Cortex-X4 core, three 2.85GHz Cortex-X4 cores, and four 2GHz Cortex-A720 cores.

Just as a point of reference, a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2-equipped phone usually runs to around 80% of its performance yield after more than 60 minutes of the CPU throttle test in our testing.

The CPU throttling test is designed to run all the CPU cores at full blast to see how the phone copes with maximum stress. The vivo X100 Pro, like most other flagship phones, has a passive cooling solution, in this case, a vapor chamber designed to move heat away from the SoC. You could expect better performance from a device with active cooling, like a fan, but we're yet to see such a phone with the Dimensity 9300.

I agree completely with you. Most of the performance cores of ARM are just terrible with heat. And therefore with sustained performance too. ARM just has to be honest about it, since its getting progressively worse. Also, all Smartphone makers n...

Interestingly, the Dimensity 9300 throttling seems to be paid propaganda by its competitor and people who are working with it/them? I suspect that it would only as much as Snapdragon, maybe even less. With a firmware update this minor drop in p...
